Members of the League of Women Voters from around the state will meet for training workshops at the Crowne Plaza, Hampton Marina on Saturday, August 28 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. The host for the event is the Virginia League's newest local unit + the Virginia Peninsula Members at Large (MAL). Read the full Press Release.

State Board of Elections Secretary Nancy Rodrigues was on hand as the League of Women Voters of Virginia marked another year of service to the Commonwealth at the LWV-VA Council hosted by the Lynchburg LWV on Saturday, May 1, at the Holiday Inn in downtown Lynchburg. The Virginia General Assembly offers JOINT RESOLUTIONS on January 29, 2010 Commending the League of Women Voters of Virginia on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the organization's founding and the historic 100th anniversary of its precursors' participation in the suffragist movement. Groups Express Profound Disappointment in Governor's Refusal to Restore Voting Rights to Persons with Felony Convictions. Read the full Press Release.

Two League Members Appointed By the Governor to the Virginia Complete Count Committee (CCC): Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced the creation of the Virginia Complete Count Committee by Executive Order 99. The Committee will serve as the central conduit of information in Virginia's efforts to ensure an accurate and comprehensive survey in the 2010 Census. CCC will also facilitate the sharing of ideas and resources between various communities in the Commonwealth. Appointed were League members: Carol Hawn, LWV of the Fairfax Area and Member Fairfax County Complete Count Committee and Olga Hernandez, President of the League of Women Voters of Virginia. League of Women Voters of Virginia Joins Coalition Supporting Healthcare Reform:

League of Montgomery County member Carol Lindstrom is this year's recipient of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government's Laurence E. Richardson award for individual citizen contributions to open government. Read the Full Press Release.

Other News

The Virginia Residency Task Force has issued their Final Report. In 2009, the Virginia General Assembly tasked the Virginia State Board: To promulgate rules and regulations to ensure the uniform application of the law for determining a person's residence for voter registration. The State Board of Elections formed a task force of interested parties to draft the rules and regulations and this is their Final Report. In partnership with Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA), the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area (LWVFA) is raising funds to erect a suffragist memorial to commemorate the struggle of these women and educate future generations. Targeted completion date for the first phase is 2010 to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment.Donate Now and help pay for this tribute to the suffragists.

League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area sponsored a panel discussion on March 18th titled Open and Transparent Government: Do We Expect Too Much or Not Enough? The discussion featured panelists Sen. George Barker, Del. Thomas Rust, Eliot Waxman, an educator from Oakton High School; Tom Moncure, Counsel for George Mason University and Amy Gardner, reporter from The Washington Post. A link to the Event Video
